Shared Ride Service
Freedom Transit offers shared ride service. You will share your ride with other people who may get picked up or dropped off along your route. We provide door-to-door service. If you need help, your driver will help you from pickup to drop-off. Drivers cannot provide lift assistance or move wheelchairs.
You must sign up with Freedom Transit before you ride and book your trip ahead of time. You will be told your trip cost when you schedule it. We require exact cash. Drivers do not give change.
Service Hours
- Monday through Friday from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Saturday from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- You can contact Customer Service Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
- You can book rides up to 14 days in advance. For rides Tuesday through Saturday, call by 12:00 PM the day before. For Monday rides, call by 12:00 PM the Friday before.
- Shared ride service does not run on Sundays, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.
Pickup Windows
- When you book a ride, you will get a 30-minute pickup window. For example, if you ask for a 9:30 AM pickup, your driver may come any time from 9:15 AM to 9:45 AM. Customer Service will tell you your pickup window when you book your ride.
- For longer trips, you may get a 90-minute pickup window. This is called a "run time." Customer Service will tell you if your trip has a run time when you book.
Canceling Trips
- To cancel a ride, call Freedom Transit at (724) 223-8747 at least one hour before your trip.
Aides and Companions
- Aides are people who give riders the physical or medical help they need. Aides ride for free.
- Companions will be required to pay a fare depending on their eligibility for Freedom Transit's programs.
General Public
Anyone can use Freedom Transit's shared ride service. General public service is not subsidized, so you pay the full fare, not a copay.
Senior Shared Ride Program
If you are a Washington County resident age 65 or older, you can ride:
- Free to your closest senior center or adult day care.
- Reduced copay for medical visits.
- 15% milage copay for all other trips, including shopping and entertainment.
Rural Transportation for Persons with Disabilities (PWD)
You are eligible for the PWD Program if you are a Washington County resident between the ages of 18 and 64, have a qualifying disability, and need rides in areas not served by the fixed route bus or ADA paratransit.
- To apply for the PWD Program, fill out the Disability Verification Form, call Freedom Transit at (724) 223-8747, or visit Freedom Transit’s office. You must include written verification of your disability from a qualified source, such as OVR, SSI, SSD, or a physician, with your application.
- 15% copay.
Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP)
If you are eligible, MATP helps you get to and from medical providers enrolled in the Medical Assistance Program. You can use it to get to appointments and to pick up prescriptions or medical equipment.
The Department of Human Services requires us to screen you and assign you the least expensive type of transportation that meets your needs.
- If you live on or near a fixed route bus line, we will give you bus tickets. Please schedule your appointments around the bus schedule.
- MATP can reimburse you for the cost of riding the bus or driving your own vehicle.
- MATP can provide a shared ride vehicle if this is the most appropriate option.
ADA Complementary Paratransit Service
If you have a qualifying disability, you can use this shared ride service for any reason. Your pickup and drop-off locations must both be within 3/4 mile.
- To obtain an application, call Freedom Transit at (724) 223-8747 or complete this verification form.
- Professional Verification Form: A doctor, organization, or agency fills this out to confirm your disability.
- Once all forms are filled out and signed, send them back to Freedom Transit.
- If you are eligible, you will pay a $3.00 copay.
We will review your application using the rules of the Americans with Disabilities Act and let you know within 21 days if you are eligible. You may get full, temporary, conditional, or visitor eligibility. If you do not agree with our decision, you can appeal within 60 days of getting it.
Veteran's Transportation Program
The Veterans Transportation Program takes eligible veterans to the VA Medical Centers in Pittsburgh. You must sign up with Freedom Transit before you ride. This service is run with the VA, and the van is not wheelchair accessible.
- The Veterans Van runs Tuesday through Friday.
- Your pickup day depends on where you live in the county, as identified in the chart below.
- All trips leave at about 6:30 AM and come back from Pittsburgh around 3:00 PM. If everyone's appointments end before 3:00 PM, the van will leave earlier.
- If you cannot get to your meeting spot and need a ride from your home, please contact us and provide a written physician’s verification stating that a disability prevents you from reaching the pickup location.
