Buying Tickets or Passes on the Freedom Transit App
- Download the Freedom Transit mobile app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
- Open the app and select the Tickets tab.
- Choose the desired ticket or pass and follow the instructions to complete the purchase.
Validating Your Ticket or Pass on the App
- Open the mobile app, navigate to the Tickets tab, and select a ticket or pass.
- Point the QR code at the camera located at the bottom of the validator onboard the bus.
Freedom Transit Smart Card
Buying a Smart Card
- You can buy a reusable Smart Card at the Washington Transportation Center.
Buying Tickets or Passes with a Smart Card
- The reusable Smart Card stores tickets and passes and validates them once onboard the bus.
Using Your Smart Card
- Scan your Smart Card with the reader located at the top of the validator onboard the bus.
Reloading your Smart Card
- At the Washington Transportation Center, ask the Customer Service Agent to reload your account.
- On the app, link your Freedom Transit account using the email you provided when purchasing your Smart Card. To reload your Smart Card on the app, choose your desired ticket or pass and follow the instructions to complete your purchase. Once you’ve purchased a ticket or pass, you can use it on the mobile app or your Smart Card.
- Online, log in to your Freedom Transit account online. To reload your Smart Card online, choose your desired ticket or pass and follow the instructions to complete your purchase. Tickets and passes are then available on your Smart Card and your mobile app (if it has been connected to your account). Please note, if you intend to use and connect a Smart Card, the mobile app, and/or online reload you need to use the same email address across the system. If using social login, ensure that your social profile is linked to the same email address.

Buying Paper Tickets
- You can buy a paper ticket at the Washington Transportation Center.
Using Your Paper Ticket
- Point the QR code printed on the paper slip at the camera located at the bottom of the validator onboard the bus
Your Freedom Transit Account
You can digitally store your purchased tickets, passes, and Smart Cards on your Freedom Transit account.
You can reload your account with new tickets and passes, using your preferred method: the Freedom Transit mobile app, the Freedom Transit web portal, or at the Washington Transportation Center.
Your account is accessible via email or social login and doesn't require the use of a password.
If you plan to use and connect a Smart Card, the mobile app, and/or online reload, ensure that you use the same email address across the system. If using social login, make sure your social profile is linked to the same email address.
